BAAL by Berthold Brecht

How exciting the idea to re-enact a theatre play in the Odeon theatre in Berlin of the 20s. How did this idea come about? The other day, we were thinking of what to present on 15th of October for the SLanguages conference and this is what we decided.

Here up front the theatre play in English.

Evelyn Solo as Fr. Emelie Mäch
Yakuzza Lethecus as Piller

Bad but keen

I am a bad student because Life keeps getting in the way and preventing me from attending regularly, or even on the right day!

BUT

Last Thursday I attended the evening class and I was thrilled.  There were three other students there, they could all speak some German, and they all entered into the spirit of being self-invented characters in 1920's Berlin and they took turns in telling parts of their story in German. (There was very little English used in this session). The teacher's task was to listen, make approving comments and sometimes reformulate using written chat. I am looking forward to when this group turn their emerging conversations into a script and act themselves in a Machima film version!

Herr Alexeis Choral

A students homework

Here is the fantastic work of one of our learners, unedited, uncorrected, uncut - simply and utterly gorgeous! (the correction is at the very end)

I am Petrus Endsleigh you may know me as the Barman in Der keller but also The waiter who keeps the tables clear in der Nussbaum.

I was born in England, in 1899, to a German father, who in trying to find a better life for himself went to England travelling across the North Sea from Berlin in 1896 and met, by chance a beautiful Irish girl who became my mother, an Irish Girl from county Cork.

Was ein nettes Lied! Hier ist der Text...

"Am Sonntag will mein Süßer mit mir segeln geh'n
Musik und Text: Sina Lenora

Träumend an der Schreibmaschin'
saß die kleine Josephin'.

Am Sonntag will mein Süßer mit mir segeln geh'n
Musik und Text: Sina Lenora

Träumend an der Schreibmaschin'
saß die kleine Josephin'.
Die Sehnsucht des Herzens,
die führte die Hand.
Der Chef kam und las es
und staunte, - da stand:

Refrain
so ganz allein!

Und dann beim Abendrot
mach' ich das Abendbrot
auf unser'm Segelboot
für meinen Süßen und für mich.

Am Sonntag will mein Süßer mit mir segeln geh'n,
sofern die Winde weh'n,
das wär' doch schön!

2
"Minna", sprach Frau Schulrat Kraus,
"Sonntag" bleiben Sie zu Haus!"
Da heulte die Minna und sagte zu ihr:
"Mich halten am Sonntag
zehn Pferde nicht hier!

Refrain
Am Sonntag will mein Süßer ...

3
Allen Mädchen geht es so,
in der Küche, - im Büro.
Am Sonntag, da haben
sie was besseres vor,
da flüstert die eine
der andern ins Ohr:

Refrain
Am Sonntag will mein Süßer ...

Explaining how the novela began. Learning German in Second Life.

Before Gwen created the present blog I had started one on Wordpress to record my personal record of the lessons I attended and my reflections on what I had experienced. Below I have copied that Wordpress blog (original now deleted) and integrated it with this one.

I’m thoroughly convinced that Second Language offers exciting possibilities for learning and teaching foreign languages, but although I spend a lot of time in SL discussing such matters, I have not observed or taught as many lessons inworld as I would like.

I was therefore quick to take up the chance to enroll for a course just started by Heike (SL: Gwen) which developed out of an EEC project. In this course Heike is trying out a new approach – learning German by collaborating in the writing of the script for a novella, an electronic soap opera. In other words the scripts, the texts will be produced by the learners.

My name's Bea Shamrock and I haven't lived in Berlin for very long but I like it very much.

I was born in Russia but then left for England, where I changed my name (Bea Sharapova to Shamrock) and became a teacher. In Berlin I work at the grocery store.

Curtis Deezul - Boxer, Singer und Komponist

Herr Curtis Deezul

My name is Curtis Deezul I have a muscular build this is very helpful in one of my professions which is boxing. Boxing is brilliant I enjoy the adrenaline the skill and....Quite oddly....the pain. I am very enthusiastic about it im not a boxing snob ill fight anywhere! In the pub or even on the street! I enjoy music I love singing so when im low on food you can see me singing my great well maybe good...okay mediocre not even mediocre songs.

My mother and farther moved out of Berlin due to the depressing atmosphere however I decided to stay. I don't like change and I don't like people maybe that's why I like beating them up? I used to have a friend he was my brother sadly he died in the war. This is the seed for so many songs.

GERMAN VERSION

Bea Shamrock erzählt.... (this is the difficult version)
